Jerusalem – The Copts

The Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate has had a presence in Jerusalem itself and at its Church of the Holy Sepulchre and since the 4th century when the church was funded by Queen Helena. The Copts have several buildings in the Christian Quarter of the Old City including Monasteries, Convents and schools, amongst which the most famous is literally the roof of the Holy Sepulchre Church.

My stay in Jerusalem coincided with the Orthodox Church Easter, when a great number of Copts arrive to the Holy City from Africa, primarily from Egypt, Ethiopia and Eritrea, to celebrate their most important religious holiday.
